COSON BLANKETS THE AIRWAVES ON “NO MUSIC DAY” ASKS BUHARI TO KICK START A CREATIVE & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ECONOMY IN NIGERIA

COSON's Chairman, Chief T. Okoroji

In an unprecedented communication master class, Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) on September 1 took over the broadcast airwaves across Nigeria as it mobilized public opinion in a professionally co-ordinated demand for a new national economy anchored on creativity and respect for intellectual property rights. Since 2009, September 1 every year has been marked as ‘No Music Day’ by COSON, Nigeria’s unapologetic copyright collective management organization for musical works and sound recordings.

On “No Music Day” 2016 many radio and TV stations across the country stopped the broadcast of music between the hours of 8am and 10am and instead dedicated the time belt to the broadcast of interviews, documentaries, debates and discussions on the rights of creative people and the impact that Nigeria’s creative industries can make to the revival of the dwindling national economy. Several leading newspapers, magazines and social media blogs also published special features on issues dealing with creativity and innovation in the national economy. COSON members across the country observed a one day hunger strike as flags at COSON Headquarters in Lagos flew at half-mast.

There was also a big “open house’ event at COSON Headquarters which event was attended by many artistes and assorted representatives of a wide spectrum of Nigeria’s print, broadcast and social media.

Across the country, top artistes, intellectual property lawyers, music industry stakeholders and copyright experts were spread out by COSON in an intricately planned and co-ordinated media assault and they simultaneously took to the air waves on different radio and television stations all over Nigeria. At COSON Headquarters, a ‘No Music Day” Command Center was set up from which the unprecedented communication activity which also involved several internet bloggers was co-ordinated.

Among the many representatives of COSON who concurrently went on air on diverse broadcast stations in different parts of the country were Prof. (Sir) Victor Uwaifo and COSON Coordinator in Edo and Delta States, Prince Biodun Eguakhide. They took over the airwaves in Benin City and environs and masterfully spoke on the issues of the creative economy on ITV, STV, Vibes FM, Channels TV, Delta Broadcasting Service, NTA, etc.
Meanwhile, Rub a Dub master, Ras Kimono was live on TVC as Sir Shina Peters enchanted them live on Galaxy TV. Nowmuzik CEO and celebrated Manager of 2 Face Idibia, Efe Omorogbe was coaching listeners of Beat FM on how the respect for copyright is critical to the progress of the music industry as Dancehall exponent, Baba Dee gave an Intellectual Property lecture on nearby Classic FM and Zdon Paporrella re-affirmed the issues on Naija FM.
As well-known Gospel singer, Kenny Saint Best spread the message on City FM, Founder Cabal Entertainment, Obi Asika was singing a similar song on Cool FM while Chocolate City Co-Founder, Paul Okeugo eloquently spoke about the creative economy on Rhythm FM.
At the same moment, Queen of love, Azeezat was live on LTV while Fuji music maestro, Sikiru Agboola spread the message on Radio Lagos.

In Abuja, COSON FCT Coordinator, Segun Awosanya anchored the massive communication undertaking and spoke live from Aso Radio.
Meanwhile, COSON had also unleashed some of Nigeria’s most active intellectual property lawyers on the broadcast media. Justin Ige was live on Eko FM Lagos, Tochukwu Tagbo advocated on Nigeria Info, Mr. Ikhane Akhigbe was taking command on Smooth FM while Akinyemi Ayinoluwa addressed the court of public opinion from the studios of Soundcity FM.
In Onitsha and elsewhere around the South East, Hon. John Ewelukwa Udegbunam held sway while the Chairman of Music Label Owners Association of Nigeria (MULOAN), Joel Ajayi was heard loud and clear on Wazobia FM. As frontline Artiste Manager, Godwin Tom delivered an Intellectual property masterpiece on STV, the very cerebral AVRS General Manager, Victor Nwokocha was talking to Nigerians on Metro FM.

Top executives of COSON were also on active duty on several stations. General Manager Chinedu Chukwuji held many spell bound on Traffic Radio with his grasp of the issues of the intellectual property economy.

Live on MITV was COSON Head of Finance & Administration, the vivacious Bernice Eriemeghe. Chibueze Okereke, the COSON Head of Public Affairs who was at the epicenter of the arrangements for “No Music Day” was breaking down the issues live on Lagos Talk. Vincent Adawaisi, the COSON Head of Membership and Isa Aruna in charge of Datatech formed a tag team that spread the word on Radio Continental while the licensing tag team of Anne Ikomi and Keji Odumbaku operated from Urban FM.

At the head of the “No Music Day” command center set up at COSON Headquarters from which the intricate web of activities were being coordinated was the Chairman of COSON, Chief Tony Okoroji, the never-say-die advocate for Intellectual Property rights across the African continent. The brilliant mind who in 2009 conceived ‘No Music Day’ and in 2016 executed the extensive communication master stroke to force the Nigerian nation to kick start a new Knowledge and Intellectual Property revolution had at his beck and call such leading bloggers as Seyi Allen, Esther Olanrewaju, and Debbie Salawu while the massive internet activities were co-ordinated by COSON’s fresh New Media Executive, Tolu Balogun.

From the ‘No Music Day’ Command Center, Chief Okoroji himself did several live radio and television interviews on the telephone, speaking with Ambrose Somide live on Raypower, Theophilus Elamah on Rainbow FM, Temitayo Balogun on WFM, etc. He was also live on Naija FM, ITV and FRCN.
Across many broadcast channels, there were extensive broadcasts of different “No Music Day” documentaries produced and syndicated by COSON.

Asked how he felt at the end of what must have been an amazing exercise, a visibly exhausted Chief Okoroji said, “Our key objective has been to engage the Nigerian people and the various governments on the potential contributions of Nigerian creativity to the development of the Nigerian nation and the necessity to fully deploy the substantial comparative advantage which our nation possesses in this area so as to provide hundreds of thousands of well-paying jobs to the teeming masses of Nigerian youth who parade the streets of our country almost hopelessly and which hopelessness invariably attracts them to become laborers in the devil’s workshop. If at the end we achieve this, it would have been worth the sacrifice”.

A MOMENT WITH BILKISSES: SHE MADE ME STRONGER

She Made Me Stronger
She made me stronger, when she decided to leave me.
She made me stronger, even when she was desperate to be me.
She made me so strong, I took another look at my zest;
And even when I thought I wouldn’t make it, I came out the best.

Looking back at how things unfolded, I probably hurt her first.
Taking an immediate second look however, I couldn’t imagine my own hurt.
I smiled as I bid her farewell, because; how else, could I have fared well.
She definitely made me stronger, the strongest of them all.

Imagine the look on her face, when they said I had made it.
Oh yes, and I “made it”, even while she tried to jinx it.
Imagine those that had been wrongly briefed,
Their disappointment, their envy; or like I heard, their total disbelieve.

She could have called herself my subconscious, because she practically was me.
She spilled and spilled, because she had thought that was a way to break me.
She made me stronger, have you heard how sincerely I sound?
I couldn’t have been more grateful, as I went higher in effortless bounds.

She made me the strongest, the best of the valued rest.
She made me who I always wanted to be, but this time; with no contest.
She lacked the knowledge, and she sure didn’t understand my worth;
Because, despite her intentions, she sure made me move forth.

I looked back and smiled, when I was expected to weep.
I still look back and smile, because really it could have been very deep.
That moment you intend to destroy, but God says, “No, this isn’t my mission”.
Then He decides to perfect it all, rendering you speechless with no diction.

She made me stronger, I’m back to that phrase.
Because, come to think of it, I would never have been so praised.
She tried to put a hold, and when I tried to break free,
I became too bold for her majesty; and carefree.

She decided to leave me, but I had already been set free.
She made me stronger, and I am forever debt-free.
Her name, you say? Is it really that important?
She made me stronger, isn’t it all that matters?

Well, if you insist; I can’t be too secretive.
All I know is, she was definitely with the old me.
I answered your question, she used to be me.
But then, she showed her true colors; thus bringing forth, the new me.

The beauty of it now is, I’ve learnt all there is to life.
All I sincerely do thus, is to watch it unfold in time.
Watch it, while of course; continue to live, and let live.
I just needed you to know she made me stronger; and with that, I forgive.

A MOMENT WITH BILKISSES: WHEREIN LIES OUR HUMANITY

Wherein Lies Our Humanity?

It did not begin today for sure; nor yesterday, and it probably might not end tomorrow; but one thing is becoming very apparent as the days go by, our humanity is fast depreciating.
Is it a religion thing? Because sincerely, that is the part I wished we understood better. Don’t misquote me, I understand well enough to be able to pen this write up. However, the incomplete understanding of all religions is what will prevent this write up from being an in-depth religious one.

In recent weeks, a lot has happened. Too much, for us to sit and keep folding our hands. Allow me to start with the most viral this year though, being the shooting of innocent lives in a club house leading to the death of 49 people, and many injured. When did we decide to take laws into our hands? When did we decide who was “good” or “bad” enough to live in “our” world, ignoring the “do not judge” that is clearly stated in both holy books – the bible and the Quran. Those who lost their lives obviously did not fall from the sky, and thus have loved ones who will never get over losing them unjustly. How can justice be served in a situation like this, when there is basically no one to be punished for this grievous crime? As humans, who wouldn’t feel justified to retaliate in a situation like this; knowing it might be the only form of closure they might ever get.

Then came the unjust and inhumane killing of two innocent, black men by deviant, bad, and probably, racist cops; a day apart from each other. This led to a vast number of people seeking justice with the hashtag “Black lives matter” which had hitherto, always been a movement, even though many refused to acknowledge. What happened next shocked the world, as in a twisted turn of events, someone was “finally” retaliating. The Dallas shooting of cops by an “angry” man who probably had been nursing the anger of bad, racist cops killing “colored people”. The sniper aimed and shot “white” cops… Men and women who have pledged to protect the nation. Men and women with families and loved ones, who stepped out of their houses with the intent to help guard the citizens of the country they had sworn to protect. Innocent men and women who have now left behind grieving, and probably now, very “angry” families too.
You see the cycle yet? It keeps going round and round.

Don’t forget the role of the media in all these. The media which feeds its people exactly what it needs them to know. The media, “which” understands that telling the people a gold dress is blue over and over again will force them to believe they actually have problems with their eyes. The media, “who” tries to stir people into their own beliefs and understanding. Everyone is definitely guilty of this, because consciously and unconsciously, everyone is the media.

Did you know that there are other countries like Turkey, Iraq, and Afghanistan that have suffered similar fates this year; rendering countless lives empty as children are left to fend for themselves?
Did you know that in other countries too, like Nigeria, innocent people lose their lives because of religion and tradition? Apart from the boko haram which is fast depreciating, cowards and illiterates actually kill people for the fun of it, some even claiming they aren’t worshiping their own God! Seriously, what is wrong with our humanity? Even the Bible clearly stated in Joshua 24:15 that “…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” and the Quran also clearly stated in Q 109:6 that “…to you be your religion, and to me, mine”. So at what point exactly did it become a religious war, and for whom are we fighting? God? Didn’t we call Him the mightiest? Have we now belittled Him so much that we fight his “wars” for Him? Have we now become his “bodyguards” that we can’t but imagine anyone “disobey” him? Wasn’t He the one that banished the devil to hell? If He wanted to take another decision, couldn’t He have taken it on his own? Or did we not read He is the lord of the worlds? Oh ye “fighters of God”, can you take a rest if your God is truly God? Why fear other people’s religion? There should be no competition or compulsion in religion. Why generate problems with others when you can live a peaceful life, and go ahead when the time is right, to be judged by the ONE true God?

A few days ago in Nice, France; another set of innocent and happy lives were taken while celebrating their national day. Their national day, for goodness sake! The obviously sick killer maimed innocent lives by shooting, and running over them in his truck, killing about 80 people and injuring many others. Is this going to get any better or worse? Are we going to continue to allow the so called terrorists to take charge of our lives, giving people who are obviously tired of life a reason to take others with them, and thereafter “claiming” responsibility? Are we going to continue to live in fear or is something going to be done about this? Isn’t it time we woke from our slumber, and took responsibility of our own lives; not waiting on people to tell us what to do for the “sake of heaven”, if that’s what it is truly about? If you really love heaven so much, how about you do your research and stop making people lie to you, as to what might lead you there. Exodus 20:13 clearly states “You shall not murder” and Q 6:151 clearly states “and do not kill a soul…” How about you stopped planning behind the scenes, doing things to make people feel bad about their religion.
All I’m trying to say is, it is high time we let God be God. Act as he has commanded, and leave his judgement to him. Do not judge for Him, no matter what race and/or religion you belong to. Remember your humanity, and Let God be God!

BREAKING NEWS! POLL FINDS EMAILS WEIGHING ON HILLARY CLINTON, NOW TIED WITH DONALD TRUMP

Hillary Clinton has emerged from the FBI Investigation into her email practices as secretary of state a wounded candidate with a large and growing majority of voters saying she cannot be trusted, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

As Mrs Clinton prepares to accept the Democratic Party’s Nomination at the convention in Philadelphia this month, she will confront an electorate in which 67 percent of voters say she is not honest and trustworthy. That number is up five percentage points from a CBS News poll conducted last month, before the F.B.I. released its findings.

Mrs. Clinton’s six-percentage-point lead over the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald J. Trump, in a CBS News poll last month has evaporated. The two candidates are now tied in a general election matchup, the new poll indicates, with each receiving the support of 40 percent of voters.

Mr Trump is also distrusted by a large number of voters – 62 percent, but that number has stayed constant despite increased scrutiny on his business record and falsehoods in his public statements and Twitter messages.

But Mrs Clinton’s shifting and inaccurate explanations of her email practices at the state Department appear to have resonated more deeply with the electorate.

Last week, the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, recommended no criminal harges filed against Mrs. Clinton over handling of classified information on a private email server, but he called her actions “extremely careless”.
